This month’s guest interview is with amazing Kara Landau ‘The Travelling Dietitian’ – find out what a healthy inspiration she is and how she can help motivate you to be the healthiest version of yourself!…
Hi Kara, we would love you to tell us a little about yourself and what sparked your interest in the Health and Wellness industry?
Growing up I came from a culture where food played a central role in our celebrations and family events; I was actually quite overweight throughout high school, and it wasn’t until year 11 and 12 where I began making healthier choices, and studying nutrition at school, that the passion to really get entrenched within the nutrition industry was sparked. After losing some weight, and feeling the physical and emotionally empowering benefits that came with this, I haven’t looked back in taking on my mission to inspire others to lead the healthiest and more vibrant life possible.
* What are you focusing on these days?
These days my overarching goal in everything that I do, is to inspire and empower as many people as possible on the benefits of incorporating gut healthy nutrients and foods into their diets.
I love showing people all the amazing ingredients that aren’t commonly spoken about, but that are actually available to us all. I love increasing others confidence in understanding how to use ingredients such as kefir, tigernut meal, Green Calcium, green banana resistant starch, vitafiber, and more, so that they too can enjoy delicious and nourishing food with ease.
I am currently doing this via all my online channels as the “Travelling Dietitian”, as well as acting as a brand spokesperson for various healthy food companies, producing nutrition education and recipe videos, as well as talking directly to the mainstream media across a range of platforms.
* What plans do you have for the future?
I am quietly plugging away at bringing to life both a new television show around healthy eating, as well as a new healthy food product that I can’t wait to share with you all shortly!
My ultimate goal is to be in a position where I can help innovate and shape larger health promotion initiatives, whereby I can join the corporate and the not for profit segments, such as creating programs through national supermarket chains, as well as on an international level, such as working with an organization such as World Vision.
* Do you have anything that’s non-negotiable when it comes to your health and wellbeing?
I genuinely practice what I preach, and you won’t find me consuming refined carbohydrates or products filled with artificial sweeteners. I strongly believe that the food choices we make directly impact our mental health and can keep us feeling positive, internally strong, and focused. For this reason, I always ensure I have a nice mix of proteins, healthy fats, prebiotic fibres, probiotics, antixodiants and omega-3s throughout my day (and in the most part, in every meal and snack).
* What is your favourite food or healthy practice that you couldn’t do without?
I love so many different foods that I am never really sure how to answer this question! I do absolutely love salmon, and if its on the menu, this girl is ordering it! However if talking about a food that I consume every day, it would have to be nut butter! I like to take natural nut butters like peanut butter, or almond, hazelnut or cashew butter, and then mix through them a range of delicious additions, such as cinnamon, stevia, coconut butter, desiccated coconut, cacao, mesquite or a variety of other goodies to turn the nut butter into something truly delectable and nutritious!
* Would you like to tell us something about you that most people wouldn’t know when they first meet you?
I am actually quite introverted and have a softer side to my personality. When people meet me, they always get to see the bubbly outgoing strong professional who is happy to lead a conversation, however those that spend a bit more time alone with me soon come to realize I actually have a complete other side to my personality that is just as much a part of who I am.
* Who or what inspires you?
I am inspired by innovators, people that have really made a dent in their industries and in the world, by pushing things forward and not giving up. The common examples include Richard Branson and Steve Jobs, but then there are others such as Dr David Katz who spreads intelligent nutritional knowledge daily throughout huge online platforms from the USA, or even people from within my own generation such as Jack Delosa whose mentalities I can often relate and connect with. I hope to be able to leave just as big a mark on a global scale when it comes to pushing the understanding, and ability of others, to implement changes to living a healthy lifestyle.
* Do you have a favourite superfood or healthy ingredient?
These days I appear to be a bit obsessed with vitafiber, it is a liquid prebiotic fibre sweetener that allows you to remove any sugar calories from your food and replace them with a natural and functionally beneficial ingredient that doesn’t spike blood sugar levels, provides prebiotic fibre benefits, and isn’t intensely sweet. I use it in bliss balls, icing mixtures and cookies, and it replaces ingredients such as maple syrup, honey, rice malt syrup and the like, so that my recipes can truly be “sugar free”.
* Would you like to share one of your favourite ‘healthy’ recipes using a GREEN NUTRITIONALS product with us?
